Melissa Shaffer’s vision for a safer world
On June 20th, 2018 Melissa Shaffer was special keynote speaker for Malibu Toastmasters Club inside The Malibu Library to speak on Chaperone Safety App and her entire journey as an extraordinary woman in Technology.
Prior to her keynote, Malibu Toastmasters conducted Table Topics on the topic of trajectory of Melissa Shaffer.
During Table Topics, the theme & questions were based on WOMEN IN TECHNOLOGY. All the responses were very compelling. Among the participants were Jenni Ogden Frank Colossi, Kathlyn Stabile, Ty Givens.
he best Table Topics Award went to Jenni Ogden who shared her vivid experiences as a woman, mother, and business owner and how important is to have Chaperone Safety App.
During speeches, 4 amazing members giving prepared speeches including two icebreakers Jamal Hill with “Shape of Water”, Kathlyn Stabile with “My Journey”, Zhanna Bright with “My Why”, Arica Ohanisian with “The Power Of A Woman”.

ABOUT KEYNOTE SPEAKER MELISSA SHAFFER
Melissa Shaffer was born and raised at the shore on the east coast. After she studied business at Rider University, she graduated with her bachelor’s degree and majored in Human Resources. After about 5 years out in the real world, Melissa made a bold decision to leave home for the lifestyle on the other coast. She packed up her car and drove solo, cross-country to sunny San Diego.
Within the first six months of living a permanent vacation, her permanent smile was abruptly taken from her when a male perpetrator turned the lights off while she was taking a shower. He broke in while she was sleeping, waited like a predator and got away. He couldn’t be described, forget about identified, because of the burlap hood he wore with the eyes cut out and the black gloves.
Melissa suffered PTSD from that day forward and realized years later that this was when she first started to say and believe that she was “lucky” for not being sexually assaulted.
That event is life changing enough for anyone but it wasn’t the last time her personal space would be violated. The next time, Melissa was robbed while sleeping the first night she arrived in Hawaii. Again, “lucky” for escaping assault a second time.
Melissa continued to focus on her career path as a business partner in the field of HR. Her experience ranged from start-ups to Fortune 500 for over 20 years and most recently she served as the Vice President, Human Resources in the FinTech industry. After a year of doing ‘double-time’ of a professional career in HR and a start-up, she was bold again and left her HR career to pursue a dream.
Today, Melissa is a Female Entrepreneur as a result of her experiences and passion. She is the Founder and CEO of Poyda Technologies, Inc. which developed its first offering, Chaperone, a mobile app for personal safety and security. The idea was created when a conversation about the fundamental gaps in safety and security triggered her passionate feelings on the topic. That was also when she decided to do something about the way we think of and provide safety and security solutions. Feeling “lucky” for not being assaulted cannot be an acceptable quality of life for anyone.Within one month, she secured an engineering firm and had a working prototype to demonstrate during a top destination summit which lead to the next phase and team of supporters.Two and a half years later, the Monitoring Service is integrated and supported by the global leader in safety and security solutions. Testing is complete, the team is staffed and trained.
To get to this significant milestone, Melissa leveraged her network of incredibly wonderful, talented people, professional and personal, that all jumped on board, wanting to help any way possible because of their belief in the need for Chaperone. This app was designed, developed, supported and submitted with lots of love and hard work. It also took a lot of humble learning. Melissa is now dangerously knowledgeable in technology, innovation, design, data and more. She claims to have learned more in the past two years than ever thought possible. Her passion now is to make sure when someone feels “lucky” it’s because they won the jackpot…not because they got away alive.
