THE YOUNG INVENTOR OF THE YEAR: The Success Story of Jorge Garifuna Jr and J Stand

Tell us about your success inventing the J Stand?

When I was young, I tried making a phone stand out of Lego. After my parents tried it, they said it was very useful. My dad said I should make a model online so I could 3D print it. It took me about a week to finish the model.

It had some problems holding a phone without falling, so I made a second version. When the second model worked successfully, I added other additions to it, such as a charging port and additional angles to place the phone. A few years later, I decided to completely redesign the stand so that it was more compact and sturdy enough to hold larger devices.

I named it the J Stand and I tried selling it to family members. They really liked it and I was able to gain feedback on how to improve the device more. From my first sales pitch, I got about 20 orders.

What advice would you give to customers who find value in having a J Stand?

Advice I would give to people who are interested in the J stand is to not view it as just a phone stand. The J Stand can do a whole lot more than hold a phone. If you want it to hold pens and pencils, it can do that. If you want it to hold your gaming controllers, it can do that. If you want it to even hold your laptop while it’s charging, guess what, it can do that. The J Stand is a versatile item that can be used for whatever you can imagine

What is your vision in the next 5 years?

My vision in the next five years is to have multiple sites where I can produce the J Stand. My main problem right now is the speed and quantity at which I can produce the product. In the next five years I seek to eliminate that problem completely. I also want for everyone I know to own a J stand. This way It will be easier to promote to the rest of the world.
