Legendary Tennis Player & Coach Maurice Hunter and singer Freda Payne

Dear Mrs. Cherisse Goedhart and the entire Hunter Family,

We are writing to pay tribute to the life and legacy of your beloved Maurice Renee Hunter, who passed away on October 17, 2022, in Los Angeles, California. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.

Maurice’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to service and community, and we want to recognize and honor his accomplishments. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he became a champion tennis player at Hollywood High School before moving on to Pepperdine University, where he continued to excel both on and off the court. His passion for tennis led him to serve the Malibu community through tennis camps, where he mentored and taught children from all backgrounds and walks of life.

Maurice’s contributions to the community extended far beyond his involvement in tennis. He contributed to landmark celebrity charity events, including Hal Awards with Berry Gordy and Motown legends, to raise funds for black students devoted to the arts and music. He served as staff for Los Angeles County Recreation Parks for over 30 years, managing and leading Bethune Park. He trained and coached tennis to people of all ages, including Jeffrey Lipsius, a famous author of Selling To The Point, who became ranked top 50 in the country for seniors tennis after working with Maurice in Pacific Palisades for over four years.

Maurice’s contributions were recognized by several leaders at the local, city, county, and state level, and he has left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. His dedication to service and community is a testament to the values he held dear, and his impact will be felt for years to come.

We commend Maurice for his public service and his legacy, and we want to express our gratitude for the impact he has had on so many lives. We offer our condolences to you and your family during this difficult time, and we hope that you find comfort in knowing that Maurice’s life and contributions will not be forgotten.

Sincerely,

President Jose Angel Manaiza Jr
